Invar effect in Pu-Ga alloys
نویسندگان
چکیده
We show that the anomalous thermal expansion behavior of Pu-Ga alloys can be explained by an invar effect, which is modeled by assuming the thermal transfer of Pu atoms from a lower-energy, higher-volume δ1 state to a higher-energy, lowervolume δ2 state. From a fit to the available neutron diffraction data on the lattice constants of Pu-Ga alloys, the energy separation of these states is found from thermal expansion data to be 1400K. The invar model enables a precise evaluation of the coefficient of thermal expansion and of the Grüneisen constant. The addition of Ga forces a stabilization of the δ2 state and suppresses the negative thermal expansion. † E-mail: [email protected]

Invar Model for δ-phase Pu: Thermal Expansion, Elastic, and Magnetic properties
We present a statistical mechanical model for the anomalous thermodynamic properties of FCC delta phase plutonium and Pu-Ga alloys. The model is based on the addition of a two-level, “invar”-like, electronic energy structure to the ordinary Debye model for the lattice; there is no assumption of magnetic character of these electronic levels. Along with the usual Debye temperature and lattice Grü...
متن کاملMagnetic Aspects of Martensitic Transformations in FeNi Alloys
Feloo-xNi, alloys for x<34 at% i.e., up to the structurally stable Invar concentration, undergo a martensitic transformation. In the parent fcc-phase these alloys show a volume enhancement which is known as the anti-Invar effect. This effect disappears at a concentration at which the martensitic transformation also no longer takes place. In a narrow concentration range of about 301x<34 at% Inva...

T. Yokoyama 2 and K. Eguchi (IMS, The Grad. Univ. for Adv. Stud.) Thermal expansion of a tetragonal Mn88Ni12 alloy, which exhibits significant anisotropy, was investigated by EXAFS and path-integral quantum mechanical simulations. The EXAFS reveals that the Mn local environment is actually tetragonally distorted, while the Ni one retains its inherent cubic-like symmetry. The large thermal expan...
متن کاملHigh Hardness Nanocrystalline Invar Alloys Prepared from Fe-Ni Nanoparticles
High-density (>98% of full density) nanocrystalline invar alloys with significantly enhanced hardness (>240 in Vicker’s hardness) were prepared by sintering compacted Fe-Ni nanoparticles in hydrogen. The precursor Fe-Ni nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrogen plasma evaporation of bulk Fe61Ni39 alloys. The size and the productivity of the Fe-Ni nanoparticles increased with increasing hydroge...
متن کاملAtomistic Modeling of the Negative Thermal Expansion in δ-Plutonium Based on the Two-State Description
The δ phase of plutonium with the fcc structure exhibits an unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) over its narrow temperature range of stability, 593-736 K. An accurate description of the anomalous high-temperature volume effect of plutonium goes beyond the current capability of electronic-structure calculations. We propose an atomistic scheme to model the thermodynamic properties of δ-Pu ba...
